Utterly enchanting and wonderfully wearable in a generous size for its age, this original 1930s rayon chiffon dress is a beautiful example of late Art Deco femininity. Cut in a soft, fluid silhouette, it features a romantic black sheer chiffon printed with an all-over scattering of ivory, cornflower blue and lipstick-red blooms with fresh green foliage.
The bodice has a flattering V-neckline and is framed by dramatic double-layer flutter sleeves that continue into a softly draped cape effect across the shoulders and back – one of the loveliest details of the dress. The seamed waist gives way to a long bias-cut skirt, finished with shaped yoke detailing and generous godets that create beautiful movement with every step.
The sheer chiffon pulls on over the head (no fastenings) and would originally have been worn over a slip, allowing the floral print and airy construction to really come to life. There are belt loops either side of the waist to add a belt or sash. It has that unmistakable floaty quality so characteristic of 1930s occasion wear.
